CZE vs ITA

22-Jun-06
2200hrs [i] tonight, Don't miss!!!

Italy’s draw with the USA and Czech Republic’s defeat by Ghana in the second round of matches means the pre-tournament favourites to progress from Group E must both seek a win in tonight showdown in the FIFA World Cup Stadium Hamburg. Karel Bruckner’s men need nothing short of a victory to ensure survival, while the Azzurri would be sure of qualification with a draw but will be gunning for three points to avoid Brazil in the second round.

Colours for the match
Czech Republic: white shirts, white shorts and white socks
Italy: blue shirts, blue shorts and blue socks

cheers for Italy

Who Will win The World Cup 2006?? Goalcopy9hh

Goals from:
23. MATERAZZI Marco (26')
18. INZAGHI Filippo (87'

Italy secured their qualification for the Round of 16 as Group E winners after beating the Czech Republic 2-0 in Hamburg yesterday.

26': A goal against the run of play as Francesco Totti floated a corner to the far post where Materazzi, who had been on the field only eight minutes, rose majestically to direct his header inside Petr Cech's near post.

87': Inzaghi made up for that miss with the second goal four minutes later. The Czechs were caught pushing forward and a counterattack found Inzaghi racing clear from the halfway line. Inzaghi powered on, rounded Cech and, ignoring the chance to release his fellow susbtitute Simone Barone, he made the game safe for Italy.

The Czech Republic gave it a real go but Italy's first goal help them take command of the game and the longer it went the less likely it appeared that the Czechs would save themselves. Inzaghi's strike ended the contest and left looking forward to the next round while their opponents bow out.

cheers for Italy.

An injury-time penalty from substitute Francesco Totti took ten-man Italy past Australia and into the last eight of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Totti, a 75th-minute replacement for Alessandro Del Piero, drove the spot-kick high into the net after Fabio Grosso had gone down under a Lucas Neill challenge just seconds before the final whistle.

Italy had been reduced to ten men following Marco Materazzi's red card five minutes into the second half and at that stage their followers might have feared a repeat of their loss to Guus Hiddink's Korea Republic at this stage four years ago. Instead, Totti's strike leaves the Azzurri looking forward to a quarter-final tie against Ukraine.

4': Mark Schwarzer, playing on his old club ground, returned to the Australia goal after being left out against Croatia and his goal came under threat early on. Luca Toni met a cross from the left but his header from the edge of the six-yard box went inches past the goalkeeper's left-hand post.

7': In a lively start, Alberto Gilardino attacked down the left and was poised to shoot when Craig Moore produced an excellent challenge.

18': Both sides settled after the early flurry of activity. Italy looking impenetrable, Australia firm in the challenge any time the ball was anywhere near a danger area.

22': Both sides settled after the early flurry of activity but the next opening was again at the Australian end. A fine ball from Andrea Pirlo picked out Toni but the striker's low shot after a sharp turn was saved by the legs of Schwarzer.

24': Gianluigi Buffon had his first touch of note soon after as Viduka rose high to meet a free-kick but it was a simple save for the Italy goalkeeper.

29': Australia came within a whisker of taking the lead when Neill flicked on a free-kick and Scott Chipperfield brought an instinctive save from Buffon with a low drive from 13 yards.

34': Following a good spell for the southern hemisphere side, two chances fell to Toni: first he had a shot blocked, then he headed over from close range.

41': The Azzurri threatened again as Toni stretched to reach a right-wing cross in front of goal, but failed to make contact.

Marching orders for Materazzi
48':There was an early chance for Italy when play resumed, but Toni shot well over.

50': As play switched quickly to the other end, Materazzi lunged in with a challenge on Marco Bresciano some five yards outside the penalty area and the Internazionale defender was immediately shown the red card. From the resultant free-kick Chipperfield shot wide.

55': Marcello Lippi decided he could not afford the luxury of leaving two strikers on and restored his defence to full strength by replacing Toni with Palermo defender Andrea Barzagli.

58': The Australians kept pushing forward and Chipperfield, latching onto a short ball from Neill, forced another save from Buffon.

63': Italy wasted a good chance on the break when Gennaro Gattuso overhit a ball intended for the unmarked Del Piero after a quick break caught Australia short in numbers in defence.

80': The hold-up play of Viduka and the trickery of Tim Cahill had caused problems throughout the game and the Australia midfielder only just cleared the crossbar with a header from a corner.

85': From substitute John Aloisi's cross, Viduka almost carved out a chance on the edge of the six-yard box but Buffon intervened. Hesitancy in the Australia defence moments later let in Vincenzo Iaquinta but he mishit his shot from some eight yards out.

90+4': Eight seconds from the end of the game Grosso broke into the Australia box and went to ground under Neill's tackle, and referee Luis Medina Cantalejo pointed to the penalty spot. Schwarzer went the right way, but Totti beat him with a powerful drive. (0-1)

In conclusion:
Heartbreak for an Australia side who produced one of their best performances on the international stage. But credit to Italy who for standing firm when down to ten men for the majority of the second half.

cheers for Italy!!!

World Cup 2006 Finals

Italy vs. France

Who Will bring back the World Cup??.... scratch

..................................................................................................

Do you remember the Euro 2000 Final?

The 2000 UEFA European Championship, or Euro 2000, was the 11th UEFA European Championship, which is held every four years and organised by UEFA, football's governing body in Europe.

The finals of Euro 2000 were co-hosted (the first time this happened) by Belgium and the Netherlands between June 10 and July 2, 2000. The final tournament was contested by 16 nations. With the exception of the national teams of the hosts, Belgium and the Netherlands, the finalists had to go through a qualifying round to reach the final stage.

Belgium, however had a surprise exit from the tournament in the final group stage.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the tournament was Portugal, winning their group with three wins, including a 3-0 win against Germany. They reached the semi-finals, when they lost in extra-time to France.

The Euro 2000 winner was France, who defeated Italy 2-1 in the final after a golden goal by France's David Trézéguet.

Italy[/color] 1-1 France a.e.t 5-3 Penalty Shoot-Out

Who Will win The World Cup 2006?? 11524815077ds

Italy won the World Cup final on penalties on Sunday after a dramatic final destined to be remembered for the sensational sending off for French captain Zinedine Zidane in his farewell match.

For only the second time in the history of the tournament, the sport's greatest prize was settled by spot-kicks after both teams had finished extra-time deadlocked at 1-1.

Italy defender Fabio Grosso rifled home the Azzurri's winning penalty to clinch a 5-3 victory in the shoot-out after France substitute David Trezeguet had missed his side's second spot-kick.

It was the first time Italy had won a penalty shoot-out in four attempts and it handed Marcello Lippi's men a fourth World Cup crown to set alongside victories in 1934, 1938 and 1982.

An emotional Lippi paid tribute to his players after the victory.

"I just want to say thank you to them," he said. "They gave absolutely everything they had. It is just a fantastic feeling, it is something that you can only get in this job.

"It is so much more than winning the Champions League or winning the Championship. It means we are world champions."

Italy skipper Fabio Cannavaro said the win would ease the pain of wide-ranging match-fixing scandals that have dragged his country's footballing reputation through the mud in recent months.

"Italy have wanted this for a long time and, coming after everything that has happened in the past few months, it was really needed," Cannavaro said.

But Italy's success in the penalty denouement seemed almost incidental to the amazing scenes in the second-half of extra time when Zidane was sent off for a moment of off-the-ball madness in the 109th minute.

Having played majestically throughout, Zidane blew his cool and unleashed a vicious headbutt into the chest of Marco Materazzi that sent the Italy defender crashing to the turf.

The incident was missed by referee Horacio Elizondo but Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon remonstrated furiously with the linesman and the official called over the man-in-the-middle.

After a lengthy consultation, Elizondo raced over to the middle and stunned Zidane by brandishing red.

Deafening whistles and jeers rang around the Olympic Stadium from disgusted fans who had not had the benefit of a television replay that vindicated Elizondo's decision entirely.

While Zidane appeared to be subjected to some verbal abuse from Materazzi moments before the incident, his attack on the Italian centre-half had left Elizondo with no choice.

Zidane trooped off and down the tunnel in disgust, for a disastrous, and entirely self-inflicted end to one of the greatest careers football has seen spanning 12 years and 108 caps.

The match had gone to extra-time after a pulsating 90 minutes of regulation time had finished locked 1-1, Materazzi's headed equaliser cancelling out Zidane's early penalty.

With Italy and France boasting the two meanest defences in the competition going into the match, a tightly contested encounter had been expected.

But to the delight of a 69,000-capacity crowd, both teams produced an open match of the highest quality.

France striker Thierry Henry was at his scintillating best throughout, surging relentlessly at the Italian defence in a marvellous individual performance and doing his best to upstage Zidane in his final match.

That Henry was unable to find the decisive breakthrough during a second half dominated by France was down to a doughty defensive performance by Italy's peerless captain Fabio Cannavaro, winning his 100th cap.

France had taken the lead in dramatic circumstances, when Materazzi was adjudged to have clipped Florent Malouda in the box with the game minutes old.

Italy protested but Elizondo pointed to the spot.

More drama followed with the spot-kick when Zidane opted to dink his shot down the middle over Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon.

The midfield maestro's audacious effort crashed back down off the bar - and just over the line to give France a 1-0 lead with only seven minutes gone.

Italy responded magnificently however and were soon on level terms. Andrea Pirlo floated in a corner and Materazzi made amends for his part in the penalty drama by outjumping Vieira to bury his header on 19 minutes.

The equaliser was just reward for a positive first-half performance from Italy, where Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo effectively controlled the game from central midfield.

Lightning almost struck twice nine minutes later when Materazzi again outjumped the French defence from an outswinging Pirlo corner. The Inter Milan centre-back's header was goalbound but Elizondo had spotted a foul.

With fullbacks Fabio Grosso and Gianluca Zambrotta looking dangerous going forward, the Italians continued to stretch France out wide.

On 35 minutes Thuram came to the rescue once again, getting in a last ditch tackle on Luca Toni as the Italian striker darted into the area.

France's defending from the subsequent corner was again shambolic, and they were given a huge let off when an unmarked Toni hit the bar with a header.

Yet having dominated the opening 45 minutes, Italy retreated in the second half as a rejuvenated France upped the tempo, with Henry and Franck Ribery menacing throughout.

Suddenly it was Italy on the back foot. Wonderful interplay from Henry and Ribery saw the ball swept to Zidane who released Malouda in the area.

A desperate cover tackle from Zambrotta brought the Lyon player crashing down but legitimate French appeals for a penalty were rejected by Elizondo.

Italy had a Luca Toni goal disallowed after 62 minutes while at the other end Henry beat Cannavaro with a sublime piece of skill only to see Buffon save.

Extra-time saw France go closest to breaking the deadlock when Zidane saw his glancing header palmed over the bar by Buffon.

But Zidane ensured he finished his career in disgrace as the minutes wound down and Italy held their nerve to claim the shoot-out drama.

Italy Players' Quotes

Francesco TOTTI
This win is very important because it’ll go down in history. I can’t describe how overjoyed I am, I still can’t believe it. I’m happy with my performance, although the most important thing this evening was the team. France played very well with a system similar to ours. They made us suffer but we won in the end.

Andrea PIRLO
It's an overwhelming joy, but it will take time to fully sink in. I cannot believe we are the World Champions! About Zidane, the referee reacted butt. But we must not forget that he's still a huge champion. It was a hard game, but we knew it would be. We fought hard until the match finished. Thankfully, the lottery of the penalty shoot-out went our way.

Gennaro GATTUSO
We've come to the end of our World Cup adventure and I'd like to thank the German people. Everyone I've met during the past month has been very polite, respectful and well-behaved. Now we're going back to Duisburg to party all night.

Fabio GROSSO
It's a moment of overwhelming joy and my thoughts are with my nearest and dearest. I'd like to dedicate this victory to my wife and family. The penalty shoot-out was incredibly tough, but we wanted to win this World Cup more than anything else in the world and we managed to come through in the end.

Tonight's result is fantastic. We were made to suffer, but we stood up and were counted tonight. We gave our all on the pitch. I promised I'd get my hair cut if we won, so they cut it for me in the dressing room. I'll let it grow again though...

Luca TONI
Fantastic! We’re the World Champions, I still can’t believe it. I can’t think straight at the moment but it’s a wonderful feeling. Who cares about hitting the bar, the important thing was to win. Now we want to celebrate with the Italy fans when we get back to Rome. We’re going to party all summer. I hope (Marcello) Lippi stays on, but it’s his decision and he’ll make it in his own time.

Vincenzo IAQUINTA
The sixth penalty taker was going to be either me or Luca Toni. I felt very good. This year I’ve taken penalties and hit them well. Luckily I wasn’t needed in the end. France showed they’re stronger than Germany. I found it very hard to contribute in attack when I came on because I had to worry more about defending.

Gianluigi BUFFON
I still can’t believe it. It’s as if we’ve won some other trophy. It’ll be different tomorrow when I’ve had some time to think about what’s happened. I definitely would’ve saved the fifth penalty, but my team-mates were good enough to make sure it didn’t come to that.

Super
